The deadline was hours away. In this trade, the greatest temptation is not writing something wrong; it is filling the blank with a sentence that sounds reasonable. "The player is in great form." "Team morale is rising." Such sentences pass the editor, pass the reader, and quietly turn a blank into an assertion — an assertion with no dossier behind it.

In 2026 I faced the same temptation, and that time I chose differently. I wrote about a foreign striker at a Shanghai club. He scored 18 goals in a season. But I typed out every number: when he started, the team's PPDA was 14.3 — extremely loose; when he sat on the bench, it was 9.8. I called him "a defensive obstacle at the front line." The internet called me a bookworm. A month later that club lost 0-4, and the first goal conceded came from his own failed press. The old article was dug up and shared widely.

I retell that story not to praise myself, but to say the opposite: had my dataset been empty back then, I would not have written. A blank correctly named is still better than an assertion invented to look good. 3.1. Technique, Tactics and Equipment
Central question: Is the player's style and technical execution advancing or declining, and does it match or clash with a specific opponent?
Modern table tennis revolves around four technical axes: speed, spin, placement, and consistency. Every player is a unique combination of those four. People talk about "style," but style is not an adjective — it is a dossier.
When complete, that dossier answers very specific questions. Does this player serve short or long? Leaning topspin or backspin? On the third ball, does he attack first or push the opponent into defense? When the rally is balanced, who changes direction first?
When incomplete, we tell stories about an "attacking style" without knowing whether the player wins points with forehand or backhand, with loop or flat smash. Such a sentence reads smoothly and carries no information.
On equipment: in table tennis, equipment is a real variable. An old rubber and a new one differ in grip, and grip directly affects how much spin a player generates. A hard blade and a soft blade give two different ball feelings. With pimpled rubber the change is greater, because pimples reverse spin — a topspin sent in can return as backspin.
